What to Expect

At Chesterville Dental, we aim to assess urgent dental problems as promptly as possible. Your appointment will focus on finding the cause of the problem, easing discomfort where we can, and talking you through the next appropriate step. That may involve immediate treatment, temporary stabilisation, or a treatment plan depending on the situation.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Call us as soon as possible if you have:

  • Severe or throbbing toothache that stops you sleeping or eating
  • Swelling in your gum, face or jaw, or a pimple like lump on the gum
  • A knocked out, loosened or pushed out of place tooth
  • A chipped, cracked or broken tooth, especially if it is sharp or sensitive
  • A lost filling or crown, or a broken denture
  • Bleeding that won’t stop after an extraction
  • Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth

Go to a hospital emergency department or call 000 if you have facial swelling that is spreading towards your eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a high fever with dental swelling, or a serious injury to your head or jaw.

What to do before your appointment

  • Toothache: rinse with warm salty water, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and take pain relief that is suitable for you as directed on the pack. Don’t place aspirin on the gum.
  • Knocked out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. Try to put it back in its socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you can’t, keep it in milk and see a dentist straight away, ideally within 30 minutes. Don’t put a baby tooth back in.
  • Broken tooth: keep any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on your cheek to help with swelling.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown safe and avoid chewing on that side until you are seen.

How we handle urgent appointments

We aim to see patients in pain as promptly as we can, and calling early in the day gives us the best chance to fit you in. At your visit we find the cause of the problem, relieve your pain where possible and explain your options, which may include a root canal treatment, a filling, a tooth extraction or a temporary repair until a longer term treatment can be planned.

Children’s dental emergencies

Falls and sports knocks are common in children. If your child has chipped or knocked a tooth, call us for advice. Eligible children aged 2 to 17 may be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. See our kids dentist page for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a dental emergency?

Significant tooth pain, swelling, infection, trauma, or a broken tooth can all require prompt assessment.

It is best not to wait. Pain that comes and goes, or settles by itself, can still be a sign of infection or a crack that gets worse over time. Call Chesterville Dental on (03) 9570 7962 so we can check the tooth and talk you through the most suitable next step.
