Teeth Whitening

There are 2 kinds of whitening: take-home trays or in-chair whitening; we can discuss those options with you during our consultations.

Before your teeth whitening procedure, your dental specialist will provide a consultation to check your teeth and make sure that you’re receiving the right type of treatment for your situation. From there, your gums will be shielded using either bands or a gel, and the whitening product will be applied. As mentioned earlier, these products contain peroxide, namely either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide depending on the specific treatment.

Treatments can vary from person to person, with some involving the use of lasers to activate treatments. Either way, the result should be the same: brighter, healthier-looking teeth that can completely revitalise your smile.

Take-home trays obviously do not use laser or any lights.

Naturally, teeth whitening isn’t a permanent fix, but with the right level of flossing and brushing, treatments can last up to around three years. There are many factors in this, of course, such as whether the person receiving the treatment is a smoker or maintains adequate oral hygiene habits, but these treatments will provide a long-lasting effect and re-treatments are easy.

Dental teeth whitening comes in many forms, such as over-the-counter treatments that can be done from home. However, for the best results, you should book in with a qualified dental specialist to receive full treatment from an experienced professional.

Professional teeth whitening from a dentist can achieve up to 7-8 times whiter teeth. Of course, the outcome depends greatly on the original state of your teeth, but you will see a vast improvement nevertheless.

Whitening if done correctly should not harm your teeth or gums. However incorrect whitening may damage your gums temporarily. Teeth whitening is easily tolerated by most but some people do get sensitivity from whitening which can be reduced with sensitive toothpaste and will eventually subside over a few days.

The vast majority of people should not expect any pain from the teeth whitening process. If the enamel of your teeth are weak, they may be more sensitive. If that is the case, it shouldn’t last for more than a few days.
