Disclaimer- I am a dentist!
Well, there's only one main reason why anyone would get their dental work overseas - COST! I think the first point I would like to raise is that dental care isn’t expensive - neglect is. If you practice good oral hygiene at home and visited the dentist regularly for a check and clean, it wouldn’t cost much at all. However, if you do require extensive dental work (after years of neglect) it would cost a lot of money irrespective of where you get the work done.
Most people choose countries such as Thailand or Bali or Vietnam or India to get their dental work done. These countries offer dental work plus a relaxing holiday!
Why is dental work so expensive in Australia?
Firstly, we have strict guidelines such as the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) that governs the type of dental instruments, equipment and materials which we use on our patients. These guidelines are necessary to avoid defective and potentially carcinogenic materials being used in your mouth. Besides that, there are dental regulatory bodies (AHPRA) that ensure good work and standards are upheld and negligent work are brought to light. These "safety nets" are what makes our dental care (and healthcare) one of the best in the world. However, they do come with costs such as registrations, taxes and insurances which contributes to the high cost of dentistry. In addition, labour costs are high, here in Australia compared to overseas. Our minimum wage is one of the highest in the world and this contributes to the high cost of dental work. Compare the living cost of someone living in Australia and someone living in Thailand or Bali.
