What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the 3rd molars in your mouth. They usually come through your gums around the age of 17-25 years old, although there are circumstances at which they erupt at a much younger or older age. Due to the modern diet consisting of softer and more refined foods, human jaws do not commonly grow large enough to accommodate these molars. In some cases, these molars may get stuck- commonly referred to as an impacted wisdom tooth. This can become a serious issue as it can lead to infections, pain, swelling and in some cases damage to the adjacent teeth. In some cases, our dentist located in Bentleigh East may advise the removal of these wisdom teeth before problems arise.

The removal of wisdom teeth is unlike the removal of other teeth. It is more difficult, technique sensitive and requires more skill and training. Our dentists here at Bentleigh East have undergone extensive training and education to be able to remove wisdom teeth with minimal effort. In some cases, it requires a small surgery to expose the tooth before its removal. This surgery is made more complex and delicate by the presence of a nearby nerve that innervates your tongue, cheeks, teeth and much more.
